Orlando offers the traveler so much to see and do that often it is forgotten that the area surrounding the city is full of interesting sights also. In particular, the Space Coast, the coastal area in Floridas Northeast is volleyball drills day trip not to be missed.
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge
The Kennedy Space Center is the biggest attraction in the area but also boasts the biggest price tag ($30 plus for adults). The ultra frugal traveler can only enjoy the sights seen from outside the admission gates including a roadside rocket (which is a great photo opportunity).
Sharing the same land as NASA however is the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and it is free to enter. The highlights include a manatee spotting stop (Manatees are not guaranteed. I did not see one.) and a wildlife trail. The wildlife to spot are alligators, armadillos, and waterfowl.
Cocoa And Other Beaches
All along the shoreline are various beaches ranging from the calm and sandy to the surf worthy and rocky. Bring quarters to feed the meters, and other beach gear. At Cocoa Beach, surfers ride the waves. Impromptu volleyball games can be joined simply for the asking.
Cocoa Beach is the perfect place to watch a shuttle launch. That memorable event is free.
Ron Jon Surf Shop
2 million people trek to Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach every year. There is even free parking, though arrive early as the spaces fill up with you guessed it, surfers. Ron Jon boasts about being open 24 hours a day like the beach and there are often autograph signings by famous surfers, demonstrations and music. The store itself is beautiful with surfing sculptures and other art.
The Dinosaur Store
Have a dinosaur fan in the family? Then The Dinosaur Store in Cocoa Beach is a must see. This is the genuine deal. The store was founded by a couples love for digging and each specimen is personally hand selected by them. Their collection is so good that many pieces are included in museum exhibits. Admission is free and the knowledge first rate.
From space to surfing to sunbathing and dinosaurs, the Space Coast offers much for the frugal traveler, proving that there is more to Florida than Disney.
