The Truth About Our Physical Education History

Remember high school gym class? She plays volleyball, ran a mile on the track, and ducked before she hit in the face during a vigorous game Dodgeball? Physical education has a part of the educational scene for nearly 200 years. It is important that students participate in physical education, to learn their body and mind in peak condition for more and more. Currently, obesity among children is dangerous is rock climbing to epidemic proportions. Therefore, the emphasis on physical educationmore important than ever before.

The question is how physical education should be carried out? First, take a look at the history of physical education. Physical education has evolved over the years. Physical education is sufficient as "instruction in the development and maintenance of the body of simple exercises to define a study of gymnastics training in hygiene, gymnastics, and the performance and management of sports games (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)." This definition isbroad, because you can learn various topics ranging from the rules of basketball to sex education. It depends on the school policy of your state education system.

Physical education was officially recognized in the United States in the early 1800s. Colleges and universities began to offer physical education programs in the years after 1800. Finally, in 1866 California was the first physical education mandate. Many have followed this mandate in the next 30 years. TheImportance of training the body and the spirit was prevalent in the education system.

The 20th Century brought different physical education for each state. Presidents such as Eisenhower and Kennedy promoted physical education and fitness. Children took the Presidential Fitness Test each year to assess their physical fitness. This arose from the need for U.S. students to be as physical as fit as their European counterparts.

Controversial issues have playedessential role in physical education history. For example, in 1972, Title IX banned sex discrimination in schools in relation to sports and academics. This allowed athletes to participate actively in team sports other than cheerleading with the financial and emotional support of the school system.

Another controversial issue is the sexual education. It was the subject of intense debate for many decades. Each state has specific guidelines about this, what should be taught and whetherStudents may differ from the sexual education program. Some states do not allow the students a video of a child being born, while other states only discuss abstinence.

The official employment of physical education programs has a 200 year history, which has at home on controversial issues, social reforms, and overall child well-being. Physical education will continue to develop as the students' needs change, societal attitudes are changing, and the flow of educational fundsPhysical education is maintained in direction.
