Osgood Schlatter Disease - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Osgood-Schlatter (OS) disease is one of the most common causes of knee pain in the adolescent. It occurs mostly in boys who are having volleyball drills growth spurt during their pre-teen or teenage years. It is named after the two people who first described it. It is not serious and usually goes away in time. Having Osgood-Schlatter disease can be frustrating, because your child may need to limit his or her running and jumping activity level for a short time.

Frequent use and physical stress cause inflammation (pain and swelling) at the point where the tendon from the kneecap (called the patella) attaches to the shinbone (tibia). The disorder is typified by a painful swelling just below the knee on the front (anterior) surface of the lower leg bone. OSD usually strikes active adolescents around the beginning of their growth spurts, the approximately 2-year period during which they grow most rapidly. Osgood-Schlatter disease is most often seen in preteen and teenage boys from 11 to 15 years old. The condition is characterized by localized pain and tenderness in this area.

Osgood-Schlatter disease usually occurs in just one knee, but sometimes it develops in both knees. It is felt that stress on the bone from the tendon tugging it during activities leads to Osgood-Schlatter disease. It is believed that Osgood-Schlatter disease results from the pull of the large powerful muscles in the front of the thigh (called the quadriceps). Osgood-Schlatter disease typically goes away over time (months to years after the normal bone growth stops). Because of a lack of a precise definition, it is difficult to differentiate OS disease from avulsion fractures of the tibial tubercle. The pain usually worsens with exercise, jumping, and sports such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, figure skating, and gymnastics. Treatment is conservative, with the use of pain-relieving medications, application of ice in the area of pain, and avoidance of stress on the knee caused by heavy quadriceps loading.

Causes of Osgood-Schlatter disease

The common causes and risk factor's of Osgood-Schlatter disease include the following:

Activities that place repeated stress on the top of the tibia, the big bone in the lower leg, where the tendon of the kneecap inserts.

Tight quadriceps (front thigh) muscles.

Histologic studies support a traumatic etiology.

Teenagers who play a lot of sport involving kicking, running, or jumping.

Tight hamstrings (back thigh) muscles.

Risk factor: Age between 11-18 years.

Symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter disease

Some sign and symptoms related to Osgood-Schlatter disease are as follows:

Pain, swelling, or tenderness below the knee.

Swelling of the bump on the front of the leg just below the kneecap.

Limping (may worsen following activities).

Tightness of the surrounding muscles, especially the thigh muscles (quadriceps).

Numbness or tingling in the knee

Feel or hear a snap, pop, or grinding in the knee.

Relief from pain with rest.

Treatment of Osgood-Schlatter disease

Here is list of the methods for treating Osgood-Schlatter disease:

Apply ice or cold packs immediately to prevent or minimize swelling.

This injury needs rest if it is to heal properly.

Analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) may be given for pain relief and reduction of local inflammation.

Gently massage or rub the area to relieve pain and encourage blood flow.

Run at a slower speed or for a shorter amount of time and jump less often.

Wear a strap across the patellar tendon during high-impact activities, to help diminish the stress on the area in which the patellar tendon inserts.

Paracetamol or similar painkillers may be volleyball drills when pain flares up.

Rarely, surgery may be needed if the initial treatment fails.

Getting Ready for Winter Exercise

The Summer is creeping away here in Calgary. On my ride in this morning volleyball drills temperature was right at freezing so the nice easy schedule of riding in to work and home will be over sooner than I would hope. Now is the time of year that all of those outdoor activities that keep volleyball drills in shape so easily are going to come to an end in the northern latitudes.

What will you do about it?

Most people have a bad habit of fluctuation exercise. In the Spring you get sore from exercising outside for the first time since the fall and your body hates you for it, but you endure it and workout through the Summer and in the Fall and Winter get almost no exercise again and have your weight float up a few pounds hoping that you can lose it again next Spring. I will be giving tips all Winter for staying in shape but this is a good chance to look at what you should start thinking about right now.

First prioritize your exercise schedule for the Winter. It may be tougher to work out but of course you can do it if you work out the days and times you will be working out. Most of all be realistic. The best times to workout are early morning before you get caught up with the issues of the day and after work if you have a stable work schedule. If you push dinner out a bit you may be able to either workout right after work before dinner or else get an hour in while watching one of the many great TV shows that eat up our Winter nights.

Next figure out what you want to do this Winter for exercise. A few years ago my family (actually my wife and I, the toddlers had no say in it) bought a good treadmill and exercise bike and then each Fall we go out and replace one of the items and lose a bit on the trade-in but at least have some great new and new to us equipment to keep us interested in the Winter.

Lastly make sure that you have a good mix of exercise. One or two pieces of fitness equipment may not be enough to keep you motivated is make sure you plan on skating, skiing or climbing stairs in an office building to supplement your exercise this Winter. If you can find local fitness events that you can take part in. There are a lot of different leagues in the Winter be they hockey or curling or badminton and volleyball.

One great tip for exercise equipment is to have a running log of your distance. This would be floors for a stair machine or actual miles on a treadmill, bike or elliptical trainer. Using a map it is fun to keep track of the distance that you have covered and you can even try to go city to city with goals in between over the course of the Winter.

Become the Best Baseball Player on the Field With Core Strength

Baseball is a great sport. After all it is the great American past time. From little league to the big leagues people love to be a part of it. In addition to the serious baseball athlete, many people enjoy baseball as a recreational sport. No matter where your interest in baseball lies, I'm here to tell you that you can see great improvements in your game with sports specific exercises.

Baseball, like all sports, requires unique strengths. Each position puts a specific demand on the body. To properly train your body you need to prepare in for those demands. That is the concept behind sports specific training. This type of training volleyball drills the planes of motion volleyball drills position an athlete encounters and then adds resistance and balance challenges. Sport specific training enhance baseball specific strength needed for hitting, and core strength and flexibility needed for grounding and pitching.

Much baseball coaching and training is spent on game skills and drills. This is incomplete. It doesn't matter that you know what to do if you are not fast enough or agile enough or have enough power to do it. Generic workouts do nothing to help you on the baseball field. Think about the bench press for instance, an exercise that many baseball players perform. A bench press is designed to build strength and size in the chest. It's great to have a strong chest but think about the game of baseball and game situations that are faced. Where would a chest press help? It would not. You want to perform exercises that train you to hit with more power, throw with more power, run with more explosive speed off the plate and most of all build the core strength that is required for every move on the field. These are just some of the skills that are developed through my baseball specific workouts.

Another reason that sport specific training is important for all athletes is that it trains the body as a whole, which is how it is used during a baseball game. In other words no time or energy is wasted doing bicep curls or shoulder presses, instead the entire body is challenged in creative and effective ways that specifically work to improve the skills needed for baseball.

The importance of core strength, which is vitally important for stability and strength, can not be underestimated. The core is the body's powerhouse and the source of all of its movement. A strong core equals a strong athlete, it's that simple. Whether you realize it or not, your core is involved with all athletic movement, providing you with power, balance and stability. The strength, or weakness, of your core will dictate how easy or difficult it is for you to play your position on the field.

When you are moving through your baseball game you are using your body in its most functional state, in other words, as a whole. You are using your lower body and your upper body together; you're throwing, twisting, hitting, running and sliding. The list goes on and on. Your core is the basis for all of this movement and once again the strength or weakness of that core will dictate the ease in which you move on the field. Baseball players often find themselves in an unstable environment, like landing on one foot or throwing from an awkward position. You need balance, your balance comes from your core; a strong core equals good balance.

Here is a perfect example: Think of the shortstop diving for a grounder and then springing up to throw it to first, all while twisting and virtually in mid air. Can a situation be less stable? The power to make that play must come from the core!

If I sound passionate about baseball training, well, I am. I see the results first hand every day. Hundreds of athletes that I have trained enjoy incredible results and it is very exciting. I encourage you to add core training and sport specific training to your routine. Anyone can do this type of training and frankly, most people prefer it to boring and repetitive gym workouts. It can also be done in much less time than traditional workouts because the movements are so incredibly effective.

Stop Working Out and Effortlessly Lose Weight by Having Fun

If you are struggling with consistently working out, I have an idea for you. Stop working out and start having fun. Stop wondering how many calories you are burning, stop trying to figure out what muscle group you are working.

Forget about doing strength training or cardio and simply start having volleyball drills with activities that involve moving your body. Getting in shape is not about how miserable you can make yourself because getting healthy and fit should really be fun.

My friends Sarah and John are great examples. Sarah volleyball drills over 40 pounds after her having her baby just by dancing. She ditched working out at the gym and just spent hours on the dance floor. John loves music and listens to his iPod while riding his bike to work. It takes him 45 minutes each way and he loves it. John has come a long way from his overweight couch potato days his lean body is proof that riding his bike regularly is getting him in great shape. Both Sarah and John are working out without even knowing it and they are not the only ones. There are countless others without gym memberships who are in fantastic shape and are loving life.

It's time to look at fitness differently and step outside the box because there are so many ways to keep fit by doing activities that you enjoy. Here are 2 simple ideas.

1 Start Playing Sports
The definition of sports does not have the word young or youth. Playing sports is not just for kids; adults can play, have fun and make friends in the process. Search for adult teams such as basketball, soccer and volleyball leagues in your area for people in your age group. If you can't find one, be a pioneer and start one. You could also play individual sports such as badminton, tennis, racquetball or squash. Another alternative are sports that don't require a partner such as golf. I recall meeting a man in his early 50's who lost 20 pounds over 2 months just by regularly playing golf and instead of using a riding cart he choose to walk the golf course.

2 Embracing The Great Outdoors.
A lot of people spend lots of money every year getting away on vacation to do activities that you can probably do right in your backyard for almost next to nothing. Every state has a parks and recreation department that provides a place of its residents to get outside and have some fun and I bet you don't have to travel very far to find one. Here you can do activities such as hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, water skiing, climbing, rafting etc

Stop struggling with trying to workout because you have a world of options. The question you need to ask yourself is what could you do to move your body and have fun in the process? You might find yourself thinking about how you've always wanted to learn ballroom dancing or learn martial arts. When you develop interest in something it can soon lead to a passion. The point is you don't need a gym membership to get some exercise because the world is your playground. Now go use it!

An Honest Assessment of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games - Case Study

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games have now come to a close, volleyball drills China had spent billions in infrastructure to see that it was a success. Their national honor had been tied to this event in their own eyes and the eyes of the rest of the world. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games were a showcase to the World and a statement that China has arrived. So, how did China do hosting the Olympics?

Does it volleyball drills sense to evaluate and assess their success, and to take a critical look at the challenges that plagued the 2008 Beijing Olympics? After all, without careful study, how can we improve future games and the world sports community? Did China reach its goal to show its strength and sense of Global Community?

Prior to the Olympic Games China was challenged with the air pollution in Beijing, civil unrest in Tibet and the big Earthquake. China promised that they would have weather control devices preventing rain during the games, perhaps this promise was a little too optimistic, as it rained hard for 2 of the days and was quite drizzly for another 3 during the two-weeks.

China also had apparently broken the rules by allowing a 15-year old gymnast to compete, who won a Gold Medal, this is still under review and it could embarrass China greatly if she is disqualified. There were also accusation on the judging in several sports that appeared to be questionable scores to Chinese athletes. There were also some bad calls by judges in boxing, volleyball and several other sports, of course, these issues happen in all Olympics. Still, it is a source of embarrassment for the next Super Power of the Planet.

All-in-all the 2008 Beijing Olympic Summer Games were a huge success. China proved her sports prowess and the strength of character of their people. What a wonderful and gracious nation and host. You did good China and your friends in the United States are honored to have competed with you. Continued success.

Volleyball History - When Did It Start?

Volleyball is a very popular sport today. There are many intramural teams and also competitive teams around the world. But, when and where did this popular sport begin? The history of volleyball is fascinating, it is interesting to see it's humble beginnings and the changes that it experienced through the years.

The man that invented volleyball is named William G Morgan. He was a sports instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association, also known as YMCA. Originally the YMCA introduced a new sport that we know today as volleyball drills Morgan saw that the physical contact of basketball along with the fast pace tired the older businessmen that enjoyed participating in the games. So, he created a new sport with less contact and less court movement which he called "mintonette." This game eventually turned into the game of volleyball.

Morgan volleyball drills the game with members of YMCA for about a year before he decided to present it to a group of YMCA physical education directors. In 1896 the game of mintonette was presented to the directors and they suggested that he change the name to "volley ball" since the game consisted of vollying the ball back and forth over the net. The first official volleyball game was playing on July 7, 1896 at Springfield College.

The history of volleyball shows that Morgan's original game of mintonette resembled the game of badminton. It was played on a rectangular court with a net across the center of the court. The teams were split up so that there was not contact with the other team at all-- each team was placed on either side of the net. Players would use their hands to beat the ball back and forth over the net. The ball would continue to be in play until it was missed and hit the floor. Points could be earned when the opposite team could not return the ball.

As volleyball history continued, the rules changed slightly and became more defined. Officials with YMCA created a rule book that included details about the court size, ball size, and scoring system. It eventually morphed into what we know as volleyball today.
